Uncharted is seeking a Director of Business Development to grow Uncharted by developing and selling Uncharted initiatives and programs to leading corporations and major foundations (programs like Visible Connect, Futurebound Acceleration Lab and Chipotle Aluminaries Project).

 

The Director of Business Development will lead Uncharted’s sales and fundraising strategy. This means you are responsible for developing, cultivating, and securing partnerships with corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals.

 

You will work closely with Banks Benitez, Uncharted’s CEO, to build relationships, cultivate leads, and close partnerships with major funders. You will also work with the Director of Marketing, COO, and Chief Strategy Officer to ensure there is alignment with marketing and communications, strategic direction, and program implementation. 

 

You will be an external face of the organization, be tasked with representing the organization externally at times, and you will be, for many people, their first touchpoint with Uncharted. This means you love building relationships with people, are skilled at building allies amongst the people you meet, and recognize the importance of planting and watering the seeds of new relationships.

Qualifications

 

  • You have 5+ years experience in sales: You started out as a one-person sales-team for a startup and/or you have led fundraising for a fast-growing social enterprise non-profit. Then you built upon that success to build out a sales/fundraising team around you. You can speak to how you, specifically, have cultivated leads, built trust, closed deals, codified processes, and trained others to do the same. We’re looking for someone who has been an entrepreneurial, revenue-focused leader of an emerging organization that has helped them make a major leap to a new level of organizational size and impact.
    • What we’re NOT looking for: If you’ve been part of a much larger sales team, if you’ve been given a list of leads to cultivate, if you’ve joined a well-established existing organization and delivered on pre-set sales goals.

  • You have experience in product development. Uncharted has found success in selling its products and fundraising for its initiatives, but there is still further product development to go, and you will help us further define and develop our product. This means we’re looking for someone who has had experience refining, developing, prototyping, and testing products in the market.

    • What we’re NOT looking for: Someone who received a fully-established, completely-built product and ran with it.

  • You have experience building out sales processes and systems. You have built and refined sales processes based on your own experience taking products to market. You understand the boring, methodical organization and systems and tracking needed to do sales well and you can demonstrate how you’ve invested the time and effort to build this successful “back-office.”

    • What we’re NOT looking for: You have just inherited fully-functional sales systems and playbooks for the sales process.

  • You have experience in a leadership capacity in a fast-growing, quickly-evolving organization. You have led and managed through uncertainty and you are comfortable with risk-taking.

  • You are a builder and an owner. We’re not just looking for a delegator, an overseer, a finger-pointer. We’re looking for someone who wants their fingerprints all over the future trajectory of our organization by rolling up their sleeves, doing the work, thinking strategically, and setting up the processes, infrastructure, and systems to take Uncharted to the next level. This means that you’re constantly shifting altitudes between designing and doing, between strategizing and operating.

  • You are an exceptional listener and also aren’t afraid to speak the truth. On a scale of 1-10, you’re an 11 with your listening skills. But when the time comes, you are ready to speak up. You even can speak to your ability and experience to manage-up to your boss.

  • You are both a doer and a strategist. You recognize that fundraising and sales requires day-in/day-out methodical emailing and follow-up, and you recognize the importance of seeing the macro-trends in the space, of understanding the underlying psychology and pain-points of prospective funders.

  • You understand the importance of learning and listening as you step into this new role, but you also recognize that you bring a lot to the table and are confident that you can help take the organization to the next level. 

 

Responsibilities

The Director of Business Development will lead Uncharted’s sales and fundraising strategy. This means you are responsible for developing, cultivating, and securing partnerships with corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals.

  • Identify, cultivate, and pitch Uncharted initiatives and programs to corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals

  • Be an external face and key ambassador for the Uncharted brand and mission to external stakeholders

  • Contribute to Uncharted’s development of its key products

  • Lead the revenue/funding function of Uncharted. This means:

    • Manage and cultivate inbound sales and partnership inquiries

    • Proactively generate outbound sales and partnership leads 

    • Build out the sales process and back-end sales systems

    • Coordinate with the Executive team to ensure Uncharted’s funding/revenue/resources are aligned with the organization’s strategic plan

  • Who will I report to?

    • Banks Benitez, Uncharted’s CEO

  • Will I have people that I will be managing?

    • Not right away, but it’s possible we will grow the sales-team in the future. There isn’t a timeline for this yet.

  • What does my career progression look like?

    • We’re a fast-growing and evolving organization, which means there isn’t a tried-and-true career progression track. In all likelihood, you will build and lead a business development team (meaning you’ll hire people to join your team) and you’ll be one of the major catalysts in taking Uncharted to the next level of impact, influence, and size.

  • Do I need to be based in Denver?

    • Yes, but this role will require travel.

  • Wait: aren’t you a non-profit? Will I be doing sales for fundraising?

    • Yes, we are a non-profit, but we realize that whether our prospect is using philanthropic dollars or non-philanthropic dollars, we are selling the product of impact to them. We transact dollars for impact, and that impact needs to be productized and defined so people understand the impact return on their financial capital. This means you might be selling to individuals, corporations, foundations, governments. The target audience and sales processes look different, but the suite of products are similar.

  • Was someone in this role before? Or is this a new role?

    • This is a new role. Banks Benitez, the CEO, has been doing all the fundraising and sales up to this point. He will still be involved in fundraising and sales, but this role is new and is intended to be the first exclusively-focused business development / fundraising role for the organization.

  • Do you all work internationally?

    • Rarely. 95% of our work is domestic.

 

The Details

Location: Denver, Colorado (just north of RINO in the Cole neighborhood). Remote possibility for the right candidate. This position will travel approximately 25% the first year, and 50% in following years. 

 

Compensation:  $100,000+ commensurate with experience (Bonus potential based upon successful deliverables)
